Today marks the start of a new journey. And that new journey comes with the official launch of my new website. If this is your first time visiting www.incandescere.com, allow me to explain.
My name is Candace Nicholson, and I’m a writer. For years, I edited full-time, while writing part-time. From book publishing to magazine publishing to marketing and public relations, then back to magazine publishing, I edited to keep the cupboards full and the water flowing, while rarely making time to create, shape and manifest the ideas that filled my mind and connected with my sense of purpose.
But sometime last year, while working one of my usual 65+ hour weeks for 2 different jobs that incorporated my skills as an editor, writer, project manager, and logistical problem solver, I recognized that I needed to make a serious change. I knew that the energy required to keep the pace of holding 2 equally demanding jobs was unsustainable. I love what I do, and I’m great at it, but I also know that my physical health, mental health and financial health deserved better.
So at the end of December 2019 -- knowing nothing of the coming pandemic, quarantine and social strife that lurked around the new year’s corner -- I left one of my jobs, and threw myself into developing my business and leaning in to a future that embraced my authenticity and the holistic vision I have chosen to guide my life.
I know that all sounds high-falutin’, but it is the honest retelling of what happened. I wanted a better life where I wasn’t at the mercy of others’ whimsy and business acumen, so I set off to create that life. And after 4 months of prepping and planning, and 4.5 months of learning, struggling, re-learning, un-learning, asking for help, re-learning the correct way, tweaking and pruning into the wee hours of the morning, I’m proud to say that the new (and dare I say, improved) www.incandescere.com is open for business.
Feel free to take a look around. Check out my Services. Learn what I’m all About. That Portfolio is looking more robust if I may say so myself. There’s even a video showing off the best bad acting of a writer well aware of how awkward they are on camera. (Don’t judge. I save my best work for the stage.)
And yes, after 10 years at this address, you know I had to bring my blog with me. Incandescere, the blog, has more than 350 entries and has captured a decade of my life on the internet. Sure, I’m on Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn, but there’s nothing like owning your own platform, and using it to capture your voice without restrictions or obfuscation.
Here on the blog, I will still be waxing effusive about the arts, culture, holistic wellness, community engagement, and a skosh of politics, as politics affects all of those areas. The blog will continue to share a home with my business where I invite fascinating artists, healers, entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations to reach out when they’re in need of a content writer, copywriter or journalist who can take their message to the next level and deliver dynamic copy that leaves their audience wanting to know more.
As with any re-launch and re-design, I’ll continue to tweak and nip as I get used to this new platform (powered by Webflow), but despite those seemingly unending adjustments, I’m genuinely happy to start on this new path and hope you’ll join me along the way.
2020 has been a helluva year, and I don’t think it’s about to get any less harrowing. But I am determined to not let the shadows stop me from shining as bright as I can. I mean, my mother didn’t name me Candace for nothing. 😉
