In 2018, I approached Newark Pride Inc., the largest LGBTQ+ advocacy organization in the largest city of New Jersey, with a proposal to redesign their website for their community that would best serve their needs and provide a more professional and comprehensive presentation of the organization. Then-President Sharronda Wheeler agreed to my proposal, and I set about evaluating their old website and content management system (Squarespace) and decided to move the site over to WordPress, where the site could serve more dynamic content with greater flexibility.
Repurposing old content when possible, I chose a layout theme that best reflected the nonprofit mission and spirit of Newark Pride Inc. Then, I wrote new, fresh content that captured the authentic energy of the organization's board, volunteers and supporters, while communicating their goals for the future as well as their impact in the community.
The four-month project went live two months before the 2018 Newark Pride Week events took place in July 2018. Since then, the website has been handed off to another copywriter and project manager, who has required very little assistance in taking over the site's maintenance. She has also kept the tweaks and adjustments of the content and layout to a minimum since assuming control.
